Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has granted clemency to 117 convicts in celebration of Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary. This move is aimed at reforming the lives of those affected and reflects the state’s commitment to rehabilitation and second chances within the justice system ¹.
The beneficiaries include 19 convicts who will be released outright, while others on death row will have their sentences commuted to life imprisonment. Additionally, several inmates will have their sentences reduced, giving them a chance to reintegrate into society.
This decision was made following recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, which is chaired by Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice. The release orders were signed by Governor Aiyedatiwa on September 27, 2024, and took effect on October 1, 2024, aligning with the nation’s Independence celebrations.
