1,000 UNIZIK staff protest against alleged misappropriation of N1bn for salaries

    About 1,000 staff members of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, have taken to the streets to protest the alleged misappropriation of N1 billion meant for their salaries. The staff, who have gone unpaid for five years, claim that 12 of their colleagues have died while waiting for their salaries .

    The protesters, wielding placards, appealed to the university management to explain why their salaries have not been paid. They demand to know if the issue lies with the federal government, the Ministry of Education, or the university itself .

    One of the affected staff members, Mr. Ibezim Echezona, lamented that the non-payment of salaries has caused immense hardship for the staff and their families. Another staff member, Mr. Chukwuebuka Emmanuel, who is visually impaired, shared his struggles in taking care of his family due to the non-payment of his salary since 2019 .
