The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is considering joining a coalition of opposition leaders to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections. However, the party has set a condition: the coalition must not compromise the PDP’s identity.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who was the PDP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has confirmed that the coalition aims to defeat Tinubu’s All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections. Atiku is joined by Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, and Nasir El-Rufai, a former governor of Kaduna State.
The coalition’s move has been met with criticism from the APC, with Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development Yusuf Ata dismissing the coalition as “dead on arrival” ยน. Ata questioned the viability of the coalition, describing Atiku as a “serial contester” who has consistently failed in his bids for the presidency.
Despite the criticism, the PDP is expected to clarify its position on the coalition soon. A member of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) said that the party expects Atiku to provide more information on his decision to join the coalition.
