The Yobe State Police Command has made a significant arrest, taking down a 54-year-old woman named Hamsatu Modu for trafficking a whopping 350 rounds of ammunition from Buni Yadi to Damaturu. Modu, a resident of Morami village in Jakana, Borno State, was caught by police operatives at the ‘A’ Divisional Police Headquarters in Damaturu .
According to reports, the police received a tip-off about a suspected gunrunner heading to Damaturu, which led to the interception of a Golf 3 saloon car. Upon searching the vehicle, authorities found the ammunition concealed in Modu’s luggage .
This arrest comes as Nigeria’s North West region has seen a disturbing rise in arms trafficking, with women increasingly involved in the illegal activity . In fact, between 2018 and 2022, attacks by bandit groups increased by 731%, resulting in thousands of deaths and displacements .
The police are now interrogating Modu to uncover the motivations behind her actions and the larger criminal network involved. The Commissioner of Police has reassured the public of the Command’s commitment to combating crime and urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities .
