A catastrophic flood has ravaged parts of Maiduguri, Borno State, displacing millions and destroying property worth billions of naira. The flood has also led to the escape of dangerous animals, including crocodiles and snakes, from the Shehu Kyarimi Park (Zoo).
President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate evacuation of residents from the affected areas and pledged Federal Government support. Vice President Kashim Shettima described the flood as the most catastrophic in over three decades, while former President Muhammadu Buhari called it a national calamity.
Former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano State has also called for urgent Federal Government intervention. The Federal Government has begun evacuating inmates from the flooded Maiduguri prison and has assured the public of necessary measures to ensure public safety.
The flood has affected several areas, including the University of Maiduguri, the Teaching Hospital, and the Monday Market, leaving thousands of people displaced and seeking shelter in safer areas.
