Heavy Wind and Flood Wreak Havoc in Delta Communities

  • Destruction in Delta Communities: Heavy winds and rainfall have caused significant destruction in Ughoton, Jeddo, and Ugbokodo communities in Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State.
  • Extensive Losses: Residents have reported extensive losses to property and household valuables, with roofs of several buildings blown off.
  • Flooding: Flooding is an ongoing issue in the area, with residents noting it’s a recurring problem during heavy rains.

Residents like Esther from Jeddo have described the damage to their homes, saying the rain and heavy wind caused significant damage and destroyed properties. A family operating a store in one of the affected buildings lost everything when the roofing sheets were blown off, and the rain caused further damage.

In other parts of the world, similar incidents have occurred. For example, in Eastern Africa, heavy rains and floods have affected almost a million people in Burundi, Kenya, Somalia, and Tanzania. The situation has further exacerbated the lives of women and children, who already face high levels of discrimination in access to protection services and resources.
