Armed herdsmen have attacked communities in Ukum and Logo Local Government Areas of Benue State, killing 17 people, including a family of eight. The victims comprise children and women who couldn’t escape the onslaught.

The herdsmen, armed with AK-47 rifles, stormed Tyuluv, Saror, and Mbawar communities on Thursday night, shooting indiscriminately and killing several people. Many others sustained severe injuries, and several people are still missing. Residents are fleeing their homes, fearing for their safety, as the attackers seem to be everywhere.

The Benue State Police Command confirmed the attack, stating that security agencies are still engaging the attackers as they retreat. The police commissioner has assured the public that they are committed to fighting the attackers and urges residents to cooperate with the police as operations continue.

This attack comes less than 24 hours after residents raised alarms about the influx of armed herders in the area. The region is preparing for farming season, and food prices are already high in the state. The community is worried about the potential takeover of the Sankera axis, which is the food basket of the state.
