The Kano State Police Command has made a significant breakthrough by dismantling a major phone theft syndicate, resulting in the recovery of 126 stolen mobile devices, drugs, and weapons. This operation was praised by the command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, in a press statement on Friday. The success was attributed to directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, PhD, Nom, emphasizing the need to intensify efforts to combat crimes like phone snatching and armed robbery. Following these instructions, the state Commissioner of Police, Salman Garba, conducted a strategic meeting with tactical units to devise a comprehensive strategy to eliminate such criminal activities.
Kiyawa clarified that the success stemmed from a sequence of focused operations carried out from September 1-12, 2024, resulting in the apprehension of 26 individuals suspected of phone theft and robbery.
“The police not only retrieved 126 stolen phones but also confiscated drugs, weapons, and laptops from the suspects. Kiyawa mentioned that the operations targeted the prevalent problems of mobile phone snatching and robbery in certain areas of the state’s metropolis.”
The suspects are currently undergoing further investigation at the command’s Criminal Investigation Department and will be charged in court upon conclusion. Kiyawa also assured that the recovered phones would be returned to their rightful owners following proper identification and verification.
