The Senate has confirmed Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as Nigeria’s 23rd substantive Chief Justice, following a nearly two-hour screening during Wednesday’s plenary session. Her confirmation was pursuant to Section 231(1) of the Constitution.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the confirmation via voice votes and assured the nation of adequate justice under Kekere-Ekun’s leadership. Akpabio congratulated the new CJN, urging her to uphold judicial integrity.
During her screening, Kekere-Ekun emphasized her zero-tolerance policy for corruption and stated that pre-election matters would terminate at the Court of Appeal.
Kekere-Ekun, Nigeria’s second female CJN, has been serving in an acting capacity since August, succeeding retired Justice Olukayode Ariwoola. President Bola Tinubu’s nomination letter cited Section 231(1) of the Constitution, requiring Senate confirmation.
