Organizers of the #FearlessOctober1 protest have confirmed that the demonstration will take place on October 1, Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day, at Eagle Square in Abuja and Ikeja Under Bridge in Lagos.
The protest aims to address the hardship caused by fuel subsidy removal and naira devaluation. Juwon Sanyaolu, National Coordinator of the Take It Back Movement, emphasized that protest is a fundamental right and they won’t be intimidated by security agencies.
The group has informed the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, of their protest locations and expects police protection. Leader Omoyele Sowore assured that the protest will proceed peacefully, contrary to fears of violence.
Lawyer Deji Adeyanju criticized the police for summoning protesters, stressing their responsibility to protect demonstrators. The protest is a continuation of the #EndBadGovernance movement, which began in August.
Organizers remain resolute, despite the deployment of security agencies and ongoing detention of some August protesters. The #FearlessOctober1 protest aims to bring attention to the struggles Nigerians face and push for meaningful change.
