Tragedy struck at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta when a 35-year-old lion handler, Babaji Daule, was killed by a lion on Saturday. According to the Ogun State Police Command, Daule, from Bauchi State, forgot to secure the lion’s enclosure before feeding it, allowing the animal to escape and attack him.
The incident occurred when Daule agreed to demonstrate the lion’s feeding routine to some guests who arrived after the park’s closing time. Feeling comfortable with the animal, he left the safety gate open and approached the cage, resulting in the fatal attack.
The police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed that Daule’s body was taken to the mortuary at Ijaye General Hospital, while the lion was shot to release its grip on the handler.
The park’s management has begun investigating the incident, which they stated fell outside the standard feeding routine of the park. The matter has been reported to the police for further investigation.
Daule’s tragic death serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to safety protocols when interacting with wild animals.
