Tinubu Swears in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria, Vows to Uphold Judiciary Independence

President Bola Tinubu has sworn in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria, pledging to preserve the sanctity and independence of the judiciary ¹. Kekere-Ekun, the second female CJN in Nigeria’s history, took her oath at the Council Chamber of the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.

In his remarks, President Tinubu emphasized the judiciary’s crucial role in safeguarding Nigeria’s constitutional democracy. He noted that the judiciary has consistently served as a moderating force, ensuring that everyone remains in check ¹. The President assured that his administration will respect the clear line demarcating the executive and judiciary, vowining never to interfere or abuse their relationship.

Tinubu also commended Kekere-Ekun’s rise through the judicial ranks, citing her as an inspiration to women and young girls in a male-dominated profession. He expressed confidence in her ability to lead the judiciary with ethical leadership, fearlessness, and honesty.

The ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Justice Kekere-Ekun’s 89-year-old mother, Mama Wilfred Ogundimu, and her husband, Mr. Akin Kekere-Ekun. Also present were four former Chief Justices of Nigeria, the President of the Court of Appeal, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas ¹.
