Protests against bad governance in Nigeria took a rough turn yesterday as security forces cracked down on demonstrators in Rivers, Abuja, and Kano. The #FearlessInOctober protests, also known as the #NationalDayOfSurvival, were met with resistance from police, soldiers, and even suspected political thugs.
In Rivers State, police and thugs dispersed protesters in Port Harcourt, preventing media personnel from capturing footage of the incident. This move was in line with the police’s prior warning to avoid activities that could disrupt peace during the 64th Independence Day celebration.
Despite the initial disruption, protesters attempted to regroup in the Rumuola area but were again dispersed by police. A heavy police presence was maintained at potential gathering points.
Protest incidents were reported in various locations:
• Kano: Five protest leaders were arrested, and protesters were tear-gassed and chased.
• Abuja: Protesters were tear-gassed and chased.
• Port Harcourt: Police and thugs dispersed protesters.
• Lagos, Ibadan, and Ondo: Peaceful protests were held, with organizers vowing to continue the fight against bad governance.
The October 1 protests were a continuation of the #EndBadGovernance protests held from August 1 to 10, which were met with resistance from security operatives. This set the stage for yesterday’s confrontation.
