An early morning accident on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, claimed the lives of 10 passengers, including three children, when a commercial bus collided with a stationary truck at Abule-Osun, inward Iyana-Iba, along Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
According to eyewitnesses and emergency responders, the fatal crash occurred at approximately 2:15 a.m. when a Toyota Sienna bus, traveling at high speed, crashed into a parked SHACMAN truck laden with granite.
Cause of the Accident
Dr. Femí Oke-Osanyitolu, Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), attributed the crash to excessive speeding. Investigations revealed that the truck was parked on the road, occupying half of the carriageway, while the Toyota Sienna crashed into it from behind.
Casualties
- 10 passengers lost their lives, including:
- 3 male adults
- 4 female adults
- 2 female children
- 1 male child
- 3 passengers were critically injured, including:
- 1 female adult
- 2 children
Rescue Efforts
Emergency responders, including LASEMA, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Nigerian Police, and State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU), promptly rescued the injured passengers and evacuated the bodies to the mortuary.
The injured passengers are receiving treatment at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja.
Traffic Update
As of 5:00 a.m., the ill-fated Toyota Sienna and the broken-down truck were recovered from the highway to allow for free flow of vehicles in the axis.
