Israel Vows to Retaliate Against Iran’s Missile Attack

Israel has threatened to retaliate after Iran launched a barrage of missiles at its territory on October 1, 2024, with most of the missiles intercepted by Israeli air defenses or allied air forces ¹. Iranian state media reported that 200 missiles were fired, including hypersonic weapons, targeting three military bases around Tel Aviv and others elsewhere. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Tehran’s “action is concluded unless the Israeli regime decides to invite further retaliation”.

Retaliation and International Response

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that Iran “made a big mistake tonight and will pay for it.” The US, led by President Joe Biden, expressed full support for Israel, promising “severe consequences” for Iran’s actions. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin condemned the attack as an “outrageous act of aggression.” The Israeli military has begun bombarding Hezbollah targets in Beirut, with multiple strikes reported in the city’s southern suburbs.

Casualties and Damage

Two people were lightly injured by shrapnel in Israel, while a Palestinian was killed in Jericho by falling rocket debris. The attack marked Iran’s second direct attack on Israel, following a missile and drone attack in April 2024.

Escalating Tensions

The conflict has sparked international calls for a ceasefire, with UN Chief Antonio Guterres urging an end to the “broadening conflict in the Middle East.” The situation remains volatile, with sirens blaring in northern Israel, warning of incoming fire.
