Flood wreaks havoc in Ondo, Aiyedatiwa orders evacuation

A devastating flood hit Ondo town in Ondo State this weekend, destroying property worth millions of naira.
Thankfully, no lives were lost in the flood incident in Ondo town, Ondo State. Although many residents were displaced, and property worth millions of naira was destroyed, the fact that there were no fatalities is a relief.


Reports had it that the flood was occasioned by a heavy downpour, which lasted several hours on Friday.

Areas affected, according to findings include Itanla, Oka, Odo Ijomu, Bethlehem, Akure-Ondo Expressway among others.

Vanguard learnt that many houses and vehicles in the affected streets were submerged by the flood.

However, in a swift response, the state government said it had ordered evacuation in the affected areas and rapid response had begun to halt further damages.

The Environment Commissioner, Oyeniyi Oseni, in a statement, said that the government had put every necessary machinery in place to avert the flood in the future.

Oseni said that Amphibious Excavators had been deployed into critical erosion-prone areas in the state for dredging.

The commissioner attributed the flooding “to development on waterways in an estate at Fagun and along Ife road area of the community.”

The ministry’s collaboration with relevant government sections to address unlawful development along waterways is a crucial step in flood prevention. This move aims to mitigate flood risks by identifying and addressing potential causes, such as blocked drainages and construction on waterways .
