Nigeria’s Governors Pledge 15% Budget Allocation to Education, Focus on Girl-Child

Hi Nigeria’s Governors’ Forum has made a significant commitment to education, pledging to allocate at least 15% of their annual budgets to the sector, with a special focus on girl-child education. This promise was made by AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Chairman of the NGF and Kwara State Governor, at a recent international conference on Girl Child Education in Nigeria.

The conference, themed “Girl Child Empowerment through quality education,” highlighted the importance of addressing issues of access to education and learning poverty among children.

The NGF plans to engage over 774,000 Girl Child Education Volunteers’ Advocates across all local government areas in Nigeria annually to promote quality education. This effort is in partnership with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Gender Desk Officers.

Additionally, the Governors’ Forum announced a partnership with the Federal Ministry of Youth to establish a Girl Child Education Community Service Group. This group will focus on addressing the out-of-school children challenge, improving primary school enrollment, foundational literacy and numeracy, and teacher capacity training.

This commitment is crucial, as Nigeria’s education sector has faced significant challenges, including a high number of out-of-school children. The Federal Government has also announced plans to increase education budget allocation to 25%, supporting the NGF’s efforts and moving towards global standards for education funding.
