Poultry farmers in Ogun State are facing dire challenges that threaten their livelihoods. Mrs. Blessing Alawode, the immediate past chairman of the Poultry Association of Nigeria in Ogun, has called on the government to address insecurity and multiple taxation to create a conducive environment for farmers ¹.

Rising Costs and Insecurity

The cost of poultry feeds has increased by over 300% in recent months, mainly due to insecurity in arable lands and low crop yields ¹. This surge in costs, combined with growing kidnapping cases, has forced many farms to shut down, leaving workers without jobs.

Government Intervention Needed

Alawode urged the government to provide adequate security for farmers and harmonize taxes to alleviate the financial burden. She also pleaded for subsidized maize and access to federal interventions ¹.

Celebrating World Egg Day

At the World Egg Day celebration in Abeokuta, Ajibola Odukoya, acting chairman of the Poultry Association of Nigeria in Ogun, encouraged Nigerians to consume more eggs for their nutritional benefits ¹. Eggs are a complete meal, rich in protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, and oils, making them essential for health and well-being.

Challenges Facing Poultry Farmers

  • High Cost of Equipment: 89% of farmers cited this as a major challenge ²
  • Inaccessibility to Credit: Many farmers struggle to access credit facilities ²
  • Insecurity: Kidnapping cases and insecurity in arable lands hinder farming activities ¹ ³

To overcome these challenges, farmers must strengthen collaborations and partnerships. The government’s support is crucial in ensuring the poultry industry’s growth and continued contribution to food security and nutrition.
