A devastating incident has shaken the Nigerian community in the United Kingdom, as Olubunmi Okeniyi passed away on October 13, 2024, just 27 days after relocating to Sunderland with her two children to join her husband, Jacob Okeniyi.

Background

Mrs. Okeniyi had been battling breast cancer before her move to the UK. Despite receiving treatment upon arrival, doctors advised that her chances of survival were slim, and palliative care was recommended.

Concerns Over Nigerian Deaths in UK

This tragic event has sparked concerns among the Nigerian community in the UK, highlighting the increasing number of deaths among their compatriots shortly after arrival in the country. Earlier this year, Saheed Wahab died a day after relocating to the UK for his master’s degree, while another Nigerian man passed away from a heart attack two months after joining his wife in Hull City.

Circumstances Surrounding Her Death

According to eyewitness accounts, Mrs. Okeniyi’s condition deteriorated rapidly on the day of her demise. After caregivers visited her home for routine care, she requested assistance to use the commode. Shortly after, her condition worsened, and despite the caregivers’ swift return, she passed away at 4:30 pm.

Community Support

The Nigerians in the UK community has rallied around Mrs. Okeniyi’s family, setting up a GoFundMe account to support her burial expenses. As of Wednesday, over £5,800 has been raised, with the community continuing to seek donations to help with the immediate burial costs.

This heartbreaking incident underscores the need for increased support and care for Nigerians relocating to the UK, particularly those with pre-existing health conditions.
