Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago has announced a significant increase in the minimum wage for state civil servants. The new minimum wage of N80,000 will take effect in November 2024, following an extensive meeting between the state government and the leadership of the state labour union.

Governor Bago emphasized the sustainability of the new minimum wage, citing the state’s progress in agriculture. “With our advances in agriculture, I am confident we can afford it,” he stated. The governor also mentioned plans to create a civil service farm, enabling civil servants to be productive and potentially leading to further increases in the minimum wage.

The new minimum wage will benefit both state and local government civil servants ¹. Idrees Lafene, Niger State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, welcomed the development, acknowledging that while the new minimum wage does not match the current cost of living, it represents progress.
