The Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment has stepped into the alleged N3 billion fraud scandal rocking the National Assembly chapter of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN). The ministry has summoned the leadership and some aggrieved members of PASAN to a meeting scheduled for tomorrow.

The controversy began when Yusuf Abiola, a PASAN member, accused the union’s executive of misappropriating N3 billion in union funds at a press briefing in Abuja earlier this month . Abiola demanded audited financial statements and operational reports from 2019 to date from the executive and vowed to petition relevant authorities for redress.

However, Sunday Sabiyyi, PASAN’s chairman in the National Assembly, swiftly denied the allegations, labeling them “baseless, frivolous, and defamatory.” Sabiyyi urged union members and the public to disregard what he called “unfounded blackmail” aimed at distracting the union from its mandate.

Despite Sabiyyi’s denial, the labour ministry has taken the allegations seriously, inviting the parties involved to a meeting through a letter dated October 25, 2024. The invitation letter, signed by Director/Registrar Amos Falonipe Amos on behalf of the minister, aims to address the petition against the misappropriation of PASAN’s National Assembly chapter and threats of suspension of members.
