Tragedy struck in Nigeria’s mining sector as at least 22 miners are feared dead following the collapse of a mining pit at an illegal mining site within a national game reserve spanning Gashaka Local Government Area in Taraba State and Toungo Local Government Area in Adamawa State . The incident occurred in the Buffa zone of the Gashaka-Gumti National Park, where miners were extracting gold.
According to Adamu Jamtare, a miner from Gashaka, many of the deceased were from Jamtare town in Gashaka LGA . Chairman of Toungo LGA, Engineer Suleiman Toungo, confirmed that five miners had been found dead, although the exact number still buried remains uncertain . The incident involved miners from various parts of Nigeria, including Zamfara and Adamawa.
Sadly, this is not an isolated incident, as the national game reserve has witnessed multiple fatalities in recent years due to unregulated mining activities . In fact, a Tila village resident revealed that approximately 70 miners lost their lives in similar incidents last year, though these events remain largely unreported .
The authorities are taking action, with Adamawa Police Public Relations Officer SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje confirming two recent reports of fatalities from pit collapses . The police are collaborating with the Gumti National Park authorities to apprehend the illegal miners involved .
