US Commander Visits Nigerian Defence Chief: Strengthening Bilateral Ties

General Michael Langley, Commander of the United States Africa Command, recently visited General Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff, at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja. Langley was accompanied by Richard Mills, the US Ambassador to Nigeria. During the meeting, Langley praised Nigeria’s efforts in combating insecurity, acknowledging the country’s strategic leadership role in the sub-region. He also congratulated Musa on his appointment as Chairman of the Committee of ECOWAS Chiefs of Defence Staff.

The Chief of Defence Staff expressed Nigeria’s commitment to collaborating with other nations to eradicate terrorism and crime in West Africa. Musa also sought greater defence cooperation with the US, specifically in training, intelligence sharing, and facilitating the procurement of necessary platforms from the US.

This visit underscores the strong bilateral ties between Nigeria and the US, building on previous collaborations, such as the purchase of A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft by Nigeria. The meeting highlights the importance of regional security cooperation in combating violent extremist organizations in the Lake Chad Basin.
