Respect 2022 UN Order: Release Nnamdi Kanu, Counsel Urges Tinubu

  • Implement 2022 UN Order: Aloy Ejimakor, special counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, urges President Bola Tinubu to implement the UN Human Rights Council Working Group’s order to release Kanu.
  • Non-Compliance by Buhari’s Administration: Former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration ignored the UN’s orders to release Kanu.
  • Kanu’s Detention: Kanu has been in the Department of State Services’ custody since June 2021.
  • UN Directive: The UNHRC directed Buhari’s administration to free Kanu in July 2022 and provide compensation for his arrest and rendition from Kenya to Nigeria.
  • Call to Action: Ejimakor requests Tinubu to release Kanu without needing a court order.

The special counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, Aloy Ejimakor, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to respect the 2022 United Nations order directing the release of Kanu. Ejimakor emphasized that Nigeria, as a member of international treaties, is duty-bound to implement this decision promptly.

According to Ejimakor, Kanu’s detention lacks legal justification, and his continued imprisonment is a gross human rights violation. The lawyer stressed that Tinubu should not follow in the footsteps of his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari, who ignored the UN’s orders.

The UN Human Rights Council Working Group’s landmark opinion in July 2022 directed Buhari’s administration to free Kanu and provide compensation for his arrest and rendition from Kenya to Nigeria.

Ejimakor’s plea echoes the sentiments of other prominent figures, including Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, who suggested that releasing Kanu would enhance Tinubu’s popularity and earn him greater respect.
