The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has raised concerns about the increasing number of irregular migrants entering the country. Martins Moye, the Edo State Controller of NIS, expressed his alarm at the 2024 NIS enlightenment campaign against irregular migration in Benin City, Edo State . The campaign, themed “Say No to Migrant Smuggling. If You Must Migrate, Migrate Safely, Orderly, and Regularly,” aimed to educate the public about the dangers of irregular migration.

During the three-day sensitization program, Moye and his team visited the palace of the Enogie (Duke) of Eyaen, marketplaces, motor parks, and major streets to spread awareness. David Amanahu, an Assistant Controller of Immigration from Abuja, noted that Edo State was chosen for the campaign due to its past history with irregular migration. Interestingly, Amanahu mentioned that Edo State is no longer the number one state for irregular migration, which is a positive development .

Deputy Superintendent of Immigration Woshak Danladi highlighted the severe risks associated with irregular migration, including the loss of freedom, organ harvesting, and human rights abuses. He emphasized the importance of educating the public about these dangers . The NIS is now more focused on border management and migration issues, with the Controller-General emphasizing the need for safe and regular migration .
