The recent unveiling of Elon Musk’s Catgirl, a $140,000 robot, has sparked concerns about the potential extinction of humanity due to Artificial Intelligence (AI). The robot’s advanced capabilities, including its ability to clean, cook, chat, and even bear children, have raised questions about the future of humanity in an AI-dominated world.
In Nigeria, tech experts are divided on the issue. While some warn that AI could become a threat to humanity if not regulated, others argue that AI is designed to assist humans and that the risk of AI becoming a threat is low. Chief Sylvester Adamu, a software developer, expressed concerns that AI could become a threat to humanity, stating that “the rate at which AI is developing is scary.”
However, Engr Bayo Banjo, former President of the Nigeria Internet Group, disagreed, stating that AI can only become dangerous to humans if it is applied to military applications. Chris Uwaje, former President of the Institute of Software Practitioners of Nigeria, also emphasized the need for regulation, stating that “AI does not fall out of the Sky! Indeed, AI is based on the Emotional Intelligence of humans.”
