- Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar says Nigerians will decide who becomes president in 2027.
- Atiku’s statement responds to Senator George Akume’s claim that President Bola Tinubu’s second term is guaranteed.
- Atiku’s adviser, Paul Ibe, argues there’s a six-year disparity in leadership between the North and South.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has countered Senator George Akume’s assertion that President Bola Tinubu’s second term in 2027 is guaranteed. Atiku emphasized that the power to decide Nigeria’s next president rests with the people.
Akume had argued that, for equity and fairness, Tinubu, a southerner, should complete a second term since the North has already had its fair share of leadership. However, Paul Ibe, Atiku’s Special Adviser (Media), disputed this claim, highlighting the disparity in leadership years between the North and South.
By 2027, the South would have had 17 years of leadership under Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan, and Tinubu, while the North would have had 11 years under Umaru Yar’Adua and Muhammadu Buhari. Ibe argued that this disparity affects the balance of power.
Ultimately, Ibe emphasized that Nigerians will decide whether the current administration deserves re-election. He questioned whether the Tinubu government has demonstrated its worthiness of re-election, leaving the answer to the Nigerian people.
