Tragedy struck in Anambra and Abuja as at least 27 people died in stampedes during rice distribution events. In Anambra, 17 people died and several others were injured during a stampede at a rice distribution event organized by the Obijackson Foundation in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic and tragic, with the crowd becoming uncontrollable when the distribution began. The dead bodies and those who sustained injuries were rushed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Ihiala.

In Abuja, 10 people, including children, died and several others were injured during a stampede at a palliative distribution event organized by the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama. The incident occurred as thousands of residents scrambled to receive palliatives, with many attendees arriving as early as 4 a.m.

The National Director of Social Communications at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Padre Mike Nsikak Umoh, confirmed the tragic development and noted that the palliative distribution had been suspended. A combined team of police, military, and DSS officers was deployed to restore order and disperse the crowd.
