A devastating flood has struck Kano and Jigawa states, resulting in a significant loss of life and property. According to reports, at least 68 people have lost their lives since the onset of rainfall in July.
In Kano State, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Isyaku Kubarachi, confirmed that 31 people have died, with 135 others injured. The flood has also affected 156 communities across 21 local government areas, destroying 5,280 houses and displacing 313 people. A total of 31,818 individuals have been affected by the disaster.
In Jigawa State, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Haruna Mairiga, reported that the death toll has risen to 37. The flood has displaced 15,000 people, with many taking refuge in schools. The disaster has also resulted in the destruction of 12,000 hectares of cultivated farmlands, affecting 17 out of 27 local government areas in the state.
Both officials emphasized that the flooding has had a severe impact on the affected communities, with many people losing their homes and livelihoods. The situation is expected to worsen as the rainy season continues.
