Russian President Vladimir Putin made a remark on Thursday that appeared to be laced with sarcasm, stating his support for Kamala Harris in the upcoming US presidential election. This comment came a day after the US accused Russia of attempting to influence the election.
During a question-and-answer session at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Putin mentioned that President Joe Biden had encouraged his supporters to back Harris, and he would do the same. He added, with a wry smile, that Harris’s contagious laughter indicated she was fit for the role.
Putin also referenced the sanctions imposed on Russia by former President Donald Trump, suggesting that if Harris were to perform well, she might refrain from taking similar actions. Notably, Putin had previously endorsed Biden over Trump in February, describing him as more “predictable”.
The White House has responded to Putin’s comments by urging him to refrain from interfering in US elections. This exchange follows the US indictment of two RT network employees and the imposition of sanctions on its top editors, accused of attempting to influence the upcoming US ballot.
