The Federal Government’s allocation of N298.4 billion to the National Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) for the 2025 fiscal year has raised concerns. The entire allocation will be spent on recurrent expenditure, including salaries, wages, and other personnel-related costs, with no provision for capital expenditure. This decision has sparked questions about the government’s priorities and the potential impact on NASENI’s ability to invest in critical infrastructure and research.

The allocation is part of the proposed 2025 budget, known as the “Budget of Restoration,” which focuses on key areas like security, infrastructure, education, agriculture, and health. The budget has a deficit of N9 trillion and allocates significant funds to the Defence sector, exceeding N14 trillion.

In addition to NASENI, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has been allocated N175.1 million for 2025, with no provision for capital expenditure. The Defence Research and Development Bureau has been allocated N8.6 billion for the fiscal year, with N5.2 billion earmarked for recurrent expenses.
