NANS Announces Nationwide Protest Against Fuel Price Hike and NNPC Director General
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a formal notification of a planned nationwide protest, effective September 15, 2024. The protest is in response to the recent fuel price increase and the perceived incompetence of NNPC Director General, Mele Kyari.
NANS demands an immediate reversal of the fuel price hike and the removal of Mr. Kyari as NNPC Director General. The students’ union has planned to occupy all major cities on September 15, 2024, and has assured that the protest will be peaceful and lawful if their demands are not met.
Notifications have been sent to various security agencies, including the Nigerian Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Chief of Defence Staff, Nigerian Armed Forces, and all State Governors.
The circular reads:
“We notify you of a nationwide shutdown on September 15, 2024, to protest the fuel price hike and the incompetence of NNPC Director General, Mele Kyari. The constant increase in fuel prices has caused hardship for the masses, and we demand an immediate reversal and Mr. Kyari’s removal.
We call on all Nigerian students to join the protest, occupying major cities on September 15, 2024. We assure a peaceful and lawful protest, and we urge necessary measures to maintain law and order.”
