Two Catholic nuns, Sister Vincentia Nwankwo and Sister Grace Okoli, who were kidnapped in Anambra State on January 7, 2025, have been released after spending six days in captivity. The nuns, who are members of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, were freed unconditionally and are reported to be in good health .
The kidnapping occurred while the sisters were returning from a vocational service meeting in Ogboji. The police had launched a joint security operation to rescue the nuns, and although the abductors are believed to be local armed criminals, no ransom was paid for their release .
The Secretary General of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Sister Maria Ikeotuonye, expressed gratitude for the prayers and support received during the ordeal, saying, “We thank God and thank you all for your prayers and support all through these rough and uncertain days” .
