- Condemnation of the Forceful Takeover
- Criticism of the Ruling Party
- Call to Action for Lagosians
The Labour Party’s 2023 governorship candidate in Lagos, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has strongly condemned the forceful takeover of the Lagos State House of Assembly, calling it an attack on democracy and the rule of law.
Expressing deep concern over the development, Rhodes-Vivour warned that it sets a dangerous precedent.
“What we witnessed at the House of Assembly represents a troubling pattern where might is increasingly valued over right. This forceful seizure of the legislative chambers undermines the very foundations of our democracy and sends a disturbing message about how power is wielded in our state,” he said.
Rhodes-Vivour accused the ruling party in Lagos of promoting thuggery and violence over meaningful governance, arguing that such tactics have weakened public trust and eroded democratic values.
“For too long, Lagos politics has been defined by intimidation rather than inspiration, by coercion rather than conviction. The ruling party has consistently demonstrated a willingness to use force to have its way, regardless of the people’s will,” he stated.
He urged Lagosians to see this crisis as a wake-up call ahead of future elections, emphasizing the need to vote for leaders based on character, competence, and compassion, rather than party loyalty.
“The quality of our democracy depends entirely on the quality of individuals we elect. Lagosians deserve leaders who see public office as a sacred trust, not a tool for personal gain,” he added.
