A staggering 5,029 civil servants out of 32,140 in Yobe State failed to show up for a recent screening exercise aimed at verifying staff strength. Alhaji Bukar Kilo, Chairman of the Screening Committee and Permanent Secretary of the Public Service Office, revealed this while presenting the committee’s report to the Head of Civil Service in Damaturu .

The screening exercise, which began in June 2024 and ended on February 28, 2025, saw only 27,111 workers participate. The absence of 5,029 staff, who also failed to submit their bio-data forms, has raised concerns about the accuracy of staff records .

To address this discrepancy, Kilo recommended the formation of a Verification Committee to investigate further. He suggested that absentees be requir to provide original credentials, employment records, and salary statements for the past six months, with failure to comply resulting in salary suspension .

Kilo has proposed a strict measure to ensure accountability in the state workforce. A committee will be formed to compel absent employees to present their original credentials, employment records, and salary statements for the past six months. Failure to comply will result in salary suspension. This move aims to verify the authenticity of staff and ensure accurate records.

Additionally, Kilo emphasized the need for capacity-building training to enhance efficiency in the state civil service. This suggests a focus on employee development and performance improvement.

Alhaji Tonga Betara, the Head of Civil Service, praised the committee members for their dedication and integrity, indicating a collaborative effort to reform the state workforce.
