    Tragedy struck in Kogi State on Friday when a merchant boat capsized, leaving several passengers missing. The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has dispatched an emergency rescue team to search for the missing passengers .

    According to NIWA’s Managing Director, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, the boat capsized due to poor visibility and overloading while traveling to the Katcha market in Niger State .

    NIWA has set up an investigation panel to determine the cause of the accident, the number of passengers on board, and the owner of the craft . The authority will provide urgent medical attention to survivors and release more information on the incident in due course .

    Sadly, this incident occurred despite NIWA’s efforts to sensitize Nigerians about safety measures on waterways . The authority had recently unveiled the National Waterways Transportation Code and engaged with communities and stakeholders to prevent accidents on water .
