A Federal High Court in Abuja has discharged and acquitted 50 pro-Biafrans, according to Ifeanyi Ejiofor, counsel to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Ejiofor shared the news with journalists in Owerri, expressing gratitude to the court for its decision.
The 50 individuals, comprising men and women, were arrested by security agents in Anambra state on December 1, 2023, while on their way to attend a burial ceremony. They were subsequently charged with engaging in terrorism activities and meetings.
Ejiofor recalled that the prosecution presented four witnesses during the hearing, after which they filed a “no case” submission. The court upheld this submission and discharged and acquitted the 50 individuals on all three counts.
The lawyer noted that the case was handled pro bono, and they did not collect any payment from the defendants’ relatives. Ejiofor also thanked his colleagues who worked on the case, including Bar. Habila Turshak, Bar Chimmuanya Emenari, and the Head of Chambers.
