The Abuja National Mosque has pledged its support for the Federal Government’s campaign to end open defecation in Nigeria by 2030. This initiative, driven by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, aims to promote cleanliness and sanitation practices across the country.

During a recent advocacy visit, the Murshid of the Abuja National Mosque, Prof Shehu Galadanchi, commended the Ministry for its efforts and assured the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr Joseph Utsev, of the mosque’s full commitment to the campaign. The mosque has already taken steps to provide sanitation facilities for its worshippers, including toilets, ablution areas, and designated spaces for funeral rites.

The Minister emphasized the significance of the mosque’s role in promoting hygiene and sanitation practices, particularly through the influence of Imams and religious leaders. He encouraged religious leaders to incorporate sanitation messages into their teachings and urged individuals to take responsibility for sanitation in their homes and workplaces.

Notably, 142 local government areas have already been declared open defecation-free, with Jigawa being the only state to have fully achieved this status. The Minister expressed optimism that the remaining states and the Federal Capital Territory will attain open defecation-free status by 2030.
