- Prince Luqman Gbadegesin challenges Prince Akeem Owoade’s emergence as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo
- Gbadegesin faults the selection process, citing contravention of the Chieftaincy Declaration of the ancient town
- He argues that the recognition of the new monarch did not follow the Oyo State Chiefs’ Law 2000
Prince Luqman Gbadegesin, a candidate initially nominated by the kingmakers (Oyo Mesi) in Oyo, has challenged the nomination and presentation of the staff of office to Prince Akeem Owoade as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo. Gbadegesin’s legal counsel, Adekunle Sobaloju SAN, argued that the recognition of the new monarch did not follow the Oyo State Chiefs’ Law 2000 and the Registered Alaafin Chieftaincy Declaration of 1961.
The counsel claimed that Governor Seyi Makinde’s announcement of a different candidate usurped the powers of the Oyomesi, violating the Alaafin Chieftaincy Declaration of 1961. Additionally, the governor’s reliance on Ifa consultation contradicts a previous court judgment, which declared such consultations unlawful in the selection process.
Gbadegesin is seeking a court order to set aside the purported appointment, approval of appointment, and presentation of the staff of office to Prince Owoade. He also wants the court to declare his own appointment as valid, lawful, and proper, having been selected by the Kingmakers of Alaafin of Oyo.
