Former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, is set to appear in court today, November 27, to face charges of alleged N110bn fraud. Bello, who was declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in April, was finally arrested by the anti-graft agency on Tuesday.
The EFCC had filed 19 charges against Bello, which were later reduced to 16, with the total sum allegedly laundered rising to over N110bn. Bello is accused of criminal breach of trust involving the sum of N110,446,470,089, among other charges.
Bello’s arrest comes after he had repeatedly ignored previous summons and resisted arrest. The EFCC had sought for adjournment till November 27 in the fresh case it instituted against Bello, saying that the 30 days window was still running for the summons earlier issued.
With Bello’s appearance in court today, the EFCC is expected to proceed with the trial, which has been ongoing since April. The outcome of the trial will be closely watched, as it is seen as a test of the EFCC’s ability to prosecute high-profile cases .
