A community leader in Anambra State, Chief Michael Nwobu, has been murdered in his residence in Umudioka village, Awka. The 83-year-old was stabbed several times by unknown persons who gained access to his residence after his family members had gone to church.
Nwobu’s son, Mr. Nnaemeka Nwobu, who is based in South Korea, expressed shock and sadness over his father’s death. He suspects that the murder may be linked to a land dispute and a threat to overthrow his father’s leadership of the family. Nnaemeka also suspects some of their family members and tenants who were present in the house at the time of the incident.
The Nigeria police command in Awka is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Nwobu’s murder. The police have not made any arrests or released any statements on the matter.
This incident is not isolated, as there have been previous cases of community leaders being murdered in Anambra State. For instance, Mr. Silas Onyima, the President-General of Umuoji community, was shot dead in his home in February 2024.
