Bangladesh Student Leader Killed in Apparent Reprisal Attack

A student leader affiliated with the Awami League party of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was beaten to death on campus, reportedly in retaliation for leading attacks on protesters during the uprising that ousted Hasina last month.

Shamim Ahmed, a top member of the Awami League’s student wing at Jahangirnagar University in Dhaka, was attacked by unknown assailants on Wednesday night. He was taken to Gonoshasthaya Hospital, where he later succumbed to multiple injuries [1).

This incident marks the second killing of an Awami League student leader this month. Abdullah Al Masud was beaten by a mob in Rajshahi on September 8, after being accused of organizing counter-demonstrations against the student-led uprising [1).

The violence follows weeks of protests demanding Hasina’s removal, which resulted in over 450 deaths and her eventual resignation and flee to India. Her government faced allegations of widespread abuses, including mass detention and extrajudicial killings of political rivals.

Since her departure, several cabinet ministers and senior party members have been arrested, and her government’s appointees have been removed from key positions. Additionally, at least 25 journalists linked to Hasina’s regime have been taken into custody ¹.
