Aggrieved women from Yenizue-Gene and Okutukutu communities in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, yesterday, took to the streets to protest against the alleged rape, harassment, and destruction of their farmlands by herdsmen. The protesters barricaded the Melford Okilo Road, halting vehicular movement for several hours, and displayed their destroyed cassava tubers and plants .

The women, armed with placards, demanded that the state anti-open grazing law be implemented and the offending herders brought to justice. They refused to dismantle the blockade despite police entreaties. The protest was sparked by the recent rape of an elderly woman on her farm by herdsmen, who have taken over their forest .

One of the protesters, Madam Gift, lamented the hardship they face due to the constant attacks and destruction of their farms by herdsmen. Bonus Wombu, a retiree, also decried the government’s inability to protect them from the marauding herdsmen .

The Niger Delta Peoples Movement (NDPM) has condemned the recent massacre of community members in Edo and Bayelsa states by suspected Fulani herdsmen, calling for immediate government intervention .
