In response to the recent flooding in Makurdi, the Benue State Government has set up three relief camps and begun distributing essential materials to affected residents.
According to Josephine Haba, a member of the state Technical Committee on Flood, the camps were established to provide immediate assistance to displaced persons. The camps are located at NKST Primary School, Wadata, Gaadi Comprehensive Secondary School, and Makurdi International Market.
Relief materials being distributed include:
- Rice
- Beds
- Mosquito nets
- Wash kits (to be provided soon)
The International Organisation for Migration is supporting the efforts by:
- Renovating toilets
- Building new toilets
- Providing water for the camps
Camp Manager James Iorhuna reported that over 150 households have been registered since the camps opened. The committee aims to identify the needs of the victims and submit them to the relevant authorities.
Flood victims, such as Mrs. Ashi Aganyi, expressed gratitude for the assistance but urged the government to find a lasting solution to the annual flooding.
The affected areas include Gyado Villa, Wadata, Wurukum, Achussa, and parts of the North Bank in Makurdi. Residents are evacuating their belongings, with some reporting significant losses.
The Benue State Government’s swift response and collaboration with organizations demonstrate their commitment to supporting those affected by the floods.
