“Aliou Cisse Departs as Senegal Manager; Contract Not Renewed by FSF”
Aliou Cisse, who spent nine years as Senegal’s manager, clinched the delayed 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in February 2022.
Cisse’s wages were covered by the Senegal state, but under Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s new government, the decision was made not to extend his contract. The FSF stated that Cisse’s inability to win the 2023 edition of AFCON and the team’s exit from the 2022 World Cup in the round-of-16 stage, where they lost 3-0 to England, contributed to his departure. Additionally,
the statement highlighted concerns about the regression of the national team in FIFA rankings and the potential disaffection between the team and the Senegalese people. Cisse, who earned 35 caps for Senegal from 1999 to 2005, had been appointed as the nation’s assistant manager in 2012 before briefly serving as caretaker manager that same year.
Cisse managed Senegal’s under-23 team from 2012 to 2015 before taking over as the senior team’s manager in March 2015. After their AFCON 2023 exit on penalties against Ivory Coast in January, Senegal has been on a good run, remaining unbeaten in their last six games with four wins and two draws.Their next match is against Malawi on October 11 in the AFCON qualification.
