Canadian Lady Jailed 11 Years for Importing Cannabis
Adrienne Munju, a 41-year-old Canadian lady, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for importing 35.20kg of cannabis into Nigeria. Justice Dehinde Dipeolu of the Federal High Court in Lagos handed down the verdict, also giving Munju an option of N100m fine on the two counts preferred against her by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
Incident Details
Munju was arrested on October 3, 2024, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, during the inward clearance of passengers on a KLM airline flight from Canada. Upon examination of her three bags, 74 parcels of cannabis weighing 35.20kg were found stuffed in two of her bags. Munju claimed she was recruited to traffic the consignment through an online platform for 10,000 Canadian dollars upon successful delivery in Lagos.
Court Proceedings
Munju pleaded guilty to the charges, and her counsel, Benson Ndakara, pleaded for leniency, citing her remorsefulness and vow to never engage in criminal activity again. Justice Dipeolu sentenced Munju to six years imprisonment on count one and five years on count two, with an option of N50m fine on each count, to run concurrently.
