A recent cholera outbreak in the Yola North Local Government Area of Adamawa State has resulted in the loss of seven lives, with 71 others hospitalized and over 100 under observation. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) disclosed this information in a statement, attributing the outbreak to a recent flood that contaminated the communities’ drinking water sources ¹.
The affected communities include Alkalawa, Doubeli, Rumde, and Gwadabawa. Due to the overflow at the isolation center, some patients are being transferred to the Federal Medical Centre.
Emergency Response Measures
NEMA has collaborated with the Adamawa State government to implement emergency measures to mitigate the impact of the disease. These measures include:
- Chlorinating Toilets: To reduce the spread of infection
- Providing Water Treatment: To ensure safe drinking water
- Community Education: To raise awareness about the disease
NEMA is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with stakeholders for timely intervention.
This cholera outbreak is not the first in Adamawa State. In 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) supported the state following a declaration of a new outbreak ¹.
