Dr. James Neminebor, President and Chairman of Council, Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), has identified corruption, mismanagement, and lack of accountability as major obstacles to Nigeria’s national growth and development. He made this statement at the 29th Annual National Conference of ANAN in Abuja, emphasizing the importance of financial transparency and governance in advancing the global economy.
Neminebor stressed that financial transparency is not only a moral imperative but also an economic necessity that ensures accountability, builds trust, and promotes sustainable growth. He urged professionals to be proactive and adaptive in turning economic disruptions into opportunities for optimal development.
The ANAN president also called for strengthening institutions, enhancing oversight, and ensuring consequences for misconduct. Additionally, he advocated for empowering citizens to access information, education, and participation in the budget process.
ANAN Chief Executive Officer, Kayode Fasua, noted that the accounting profession is evolving with new technologies. The conference aims to expose members to these innovations, with approximately 6,000 participants sharing professional ideas and experiences on accounting dynamics.
Fasua also appealed to President Tinubu to introduce economic policies addressing the high inflation rate in the country. This call to action comes as Nigeria faces significant economic challenges, including a slow recovery from COVID-19-induced trade deficits and rising debt servicing costs.
