Court grants Dele Farotimi a human rights activist N50m bail

  • Human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi has been granted N50 million bail in a defamation case filed by Aare Afe Babalola.
  • Farotimi was arrested in Lagos and brought to Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, to face trial.
  • The case is related to Farotimi’s book, “Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System”, which alleged that Babalola corrupted the Supreme Court.
  • Babalola denied the allegations, claiming they were deliberate falsehoods intended to damage his reputation.
  • The Police, Ekiti State command, also filed fresh charges against Farotimi, bordering on cybercrime allegations.

    Human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi has been granted bail by a federal high court in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, in a defamation case filed by Aare Afe Babalola. Farotimi was arrested in Lagos and brought to Ado-Ekiti to face trial for allegedly defaming Babalola in his book titled, ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System’.

    The court granted Farotimi N50 million bail with a surety in the same amount, who must provide landed property as collateral . The case has been adjourned to January 29, 2025.

    Farotimi’s book alleged that Babalola corrupted the Supreme Court to procure a fraudulent judgment in the service of his clients. Babalola denied all allegations, claiming they were deliberate falsehoods intended to damage his reputation and the legacy of his law firm.

    The Police, Ekiti State command, also filed fresh charges against Farotimi, bordering on cybercrime allegations. The 12-count charge accused Farotimi of knowingly and intentionally transmitting false information to cause the breakdown of law and order.
