A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to Olamide Thomas, a social media activist who was detained for allegedly threatening President Bola Tinubu’s son, Seyi, and the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. Thomas was arrested in Lagos on December 13, 2024, and is facing a three-count charge preferred against her by the Inspector-General of Police.
The prosecution alleged that Thomas had made a video on her Facebook page, wishing death on President Tinubu’s son, as well as on the children of the IGP and those of the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, Muyiwa Adejobi. The defendant reportedly made the video after she was allegedly brutalized by police officers during the #EndSARS memorial procession at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos.
Justice Emeka Nwite granted the defendant bail in the sum of N10 million with one surety in like sum, stating that nothing was placed before the court by the prosecution to establish that the defendant posed a flight risk. The surety must depose to an affidavit of means, reside within the jurisdiction of the court, and tender a three-year tax clearance certificate.
The case has been adjourned until February 18 for trial. Thomas was represented by a lawyer, Seprebofa Oyeghe, and had pleaded not guilty to the cyber-bullying charge entered against her.
